Background

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot on board. Compared to manned aircraft, UAVs are often preferred for missions too "dull, dirty or dangerous" for humans. They originated mostly in military applications, although their use is expanding in commercial, scientific, recreational, agricultural, and other applications, such as policing and surveillance, product deliveries, aerial photography, agriculture and drone racing. Civilian drones now vastly outnumber military drones, with estimates of over a million sold by 2015.

Recent developments in UAV platforms, sensors, and image processing techniques have resulted in an increasing uptake of this technology in the remote sensing science community. UAV's are repaid, efficient and flexible acquisition systems. They represent a valid alternative or a complementary solution to satellite or airborne sensor especially for extremely high resolution acquisitions on small or inaccessible areas.

This course will introduce the main principle of UAV, flight control, data capture, image processing and data interpretation through a set of practical case studies. The course will strengthen current knowledge of UAV for remote sensing science and also address applications of UAV technology.

Objectives

To provide principles knowledge and concepts of UAV image processing
To provide hardware and and software integration and image processing techniques
To obtain a broad view of UAV applications for mapping, inventory of natural resources, disaster and to perform networking with other participants from ASEAN

Benefits

This course will increase and improve personnel capability in the ASEAN countries to apply benefits of UAV technology for country development and also respond the urgent situations such as disaster. Now UAV is emerging as a key tool for future applications.

II. SUMMARY OF THIS COURSE

ARTSA, GISTDA and UNOSAT accomplishment are more remarkable given knowledge base and apply to the honor delegates from ASEAN countries on the International Training Course Building Efficiency of UAV Image Processing for ASEAN Countries has occurred on August 21-25, 2017.

SUMMARY REPORT

In general, UAV aerial imagery offers both timely (on-demand) and more detailed (higher resolution) information than comparable satellite imagery. This course will introduce the main principles behind UAV flight control, data capture, image processing and interpretation.

ASEAN Research and Training Center for Space Technology and Applications (ARTSA) announced the lists of delegates from ASEAN Countries consists of two (2) from Indonesia, two (2) from Laos PDR, two (2) from Vietnam, three (3) from Malaysia, three (3) from Myanmar, six (6) from the Philippines and eight (8) from Thailand. The twenty-six of delegates achieved the International Training Course on Building Efficiency of UAV Image Processing for ASEAN Countries held on 21-25 August 2017 at the Sirindhorn Center for Geo-Informatics (SCGI), Space Krenovation Park, Chonburi Province, Thailand.

Building Efficiency of UAV Image Processing for ASEAN Countries course also involved with cover the principles of UAV flight control (theory, practice and practical demo), image processing (data capture and analysis) and data interpretation (using data from different case studies). The delegates obtained strengthen current knowledge of UAVs for environmental science whilst also addressing wider relevant key elements on data capture, analysis and interpretation.

The delegates can gain and apply more advantages of UAV’s ability in many areas involved with;

  • Search and Rescue – UAV’s are very useful in searching and rescuing operations. For example, they are used in firefighting to determine the amount of the certain gasses in air (CO, CO2, and the like) using the special measuring equipment.
  • Security – Many authorities use UAV’s to protect people during various emergencies. For instance, they are able to help coordinate a variety of security operations and can preserve evidence alike.
  • Inspections – Many systems such as power lines, wind turbines, and pipelines can be checked by UAV’s.
  • Surveillance – The UAV allows recording and monitoring from the sky, and therefore, they are suitable to monitor public events, protests, or any suspicious happening without being heard and seen. A great tool for the police!
  • Science & Research– They help scientists a lot in research works to observe different occurrences in nature or a particular environment from the sky. For example, drones are used to document the archaeological excavations, in nuclear accidents (measuring contamination), in glacier surveillance, to observe a volcanic eruption, etc.
  • Aerial Photography & Video – With a UAV that is equipped with an HD camera, you can take the fascinating photos and shot footage of great quality from the sky.
  • Surveying & GIS (mapping) – Using multi-spectral cameras and laser scanners, drones are able to create high-quality 3-D maps. Therefore, they found applications in various areas, including remote sensing, surveying & mapping, photogrammetry, precision agriculture, etc.
  • Unmanned Cargo System – UAV’s also serve in delivering of lightweight packages and bundles of all sorts. This way, you can have a safe, environmentally friendly and fast transport of goods by air, and you can find out more about this topic by reading our article about delivery drones.

At the end of this course, the delegates already obtained knowledge related with UAV image processing and how to used open sources software to process raw image for using in specific objective. ARTSA’s also delightfulness to collaborated this course, it will be increasing and improving personnel capability in the ASEAN countries. This course can develop the strength knowledge to quick respond with the unexpected situation and now UAV is a partial fulfillment key advantages for future monitoring and interpretation.
